Jimi Hendrix Moments After Being Banned from the BBC after performing on the Lulu Show

Jimi Hendrix hours after being banned from future BBC television performances. Photographed January 1969 in London wearing his classic choice of mixed pattern textile perfection. A style he mastered with ease with his clothing.

Photographer Barrie Wentzell recalled of the evening:

“Jimi appeared live on Lulu’s T.V. show causing a sensation when he stopped playing ‘Hey Joe’ in the middle announcing ‘I’ve had enough of this!’ - He started instead to play ‘Sunshine of Your Love’, a song by my favorite band Cream! I saw Jimi in the window and asked Lulu if I could take a picture of them together. Jimi was a BIG star but agreed to a snap. This picture was taken later with Jimi in a reflective mood and a great outfit” -Barrie Wentzell, photographer

Due to his actions of not playing the originally anticipated song ‘Hey Joe’ and stopping mid-performance to play ‘Sunshine of Your Love’ Jimi was banned from the BBC. It was rumored that Jimi and the band were not keen on Lulu joining them on stage to sing along with the final verse of ‘Hey Joe’, though the reasoning of stopping the song are not perfectly clear or recorded. Perhaps he simply did not stick to the production protocol, or his music was far too ahead of its time for television. It is a shame he was banned for that time because Jimi passed away the following year.
